Frequently asked questions
How is PAYE calculated in Kenya?
PAYE is charged on your taxable pay using graduated bands (10%, 25%, 30%, 32.5% and 35%). Taxable pay is your gross pay less allowable deductions such as NSSF and registered pension; personal relief of KES 2,400 per month is then subtracted from the tax due.
What deductions are taken from my salary?
Up to six statutory items: PAYE, NSSF, SHIF, the Affordable Housing Levy, and — where applicable — pension and post-retirement medical fund contributions.
How much is the personal relief?
KES 2,400 per month (KES 28,800 per year). It is applied automatically to reduce the PAYE you owe.
What is the SHIF rate?
SHIF (Social Health Insurance Fund) is 2.75% of gross pay, subject to a minimum monthly contribution.
How much is the Affordable Housing Levy?
The Affordable Housing Levy is 1.5% of gross pay, matched by an equal 1.5% contribution from your employer.
