How to File Your IT1 Return

A complete walkthrough for filing your personal income tax return in Kenya · Deadline: 30 June

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

Before you begin, collect:

  • Your P9 form from each employer for the tax year
  • Rental income statements (if applicable)
  • Business income records and expense receipts (if self-employed)
  • Dividend and interest statements from banks/brokers
  • Insurance premium receipts (life, health) for relief
  • Mortgage interest statement (if claiming relief)
  • Your KRA PIN certificate

Step 2: Log In to iTax

Visit itax.kra.go.keand sign in with your KRA PIN and password. If you've forgotten your password, use the "Forgot Password" option.

Step 3: Navigate to File Return

From the dashboard, select Returns → File Return → Income Tax — Resident Individual. Choose the appropriate tax period (e.g., 2025 for income earned January–December 2025).

Step 4: Fill in the IT1 Form

The IT1 form has sections for:

  • Section A: Personal details (pre-filled from your PIN)
  • Section B: Employment income (from your P9)
  • Section C: Business/rental income
  • Section D: Investment income (dividends, interest)
  • Section E: Allowable reliefs (insurance, pension, mortgage)
  • Section F: Tax credits (PAYE paid, WHT)

Step 5: Submit and Pay (if applicable)

Review the auto-calculated tax. If you have a balance due, generate a Payment Registration Number (PRN) and pay via M-Pesa Paybill 572572 or bank transfer. Submit the return and download the acknowledgment receipt.
